Benton, PA - Mary and Lynn Sheatler became the proud new owners of Goods Campground on May 22nd, 2017. Originally looking at possible homes for sale in the Red Rock area they first toured the campground in late 2016. It was obvious that maintenance and repairs would be necessary before the buildings could be open to the public. However, where others might have seen only necessary clean up and repairs, this husband and wife team saw possibilities and potential.
“The thought of hard work doesn’t bother us. I’ve worked at the Benton Foundry for over 25 years, plus occasional odd job on weekends and we raised 3 kids.” Lynn said. “It was the thought, can we actually run our own business that was scary.” Mary finished.
As every entrepreneur eventually realizes, Mary and Lynn decided that the risk was worth the reward. They began by getting assistance from economic development organizations like the Rural Business Innovation Corporation (RBI) and support from its banking partner, First Columbia Bank and Trust utilizing a Small Business Administration (SBA) Loan. Mary and Lynn, even received helpful advice and guidance from Marc Nespoli at Villager Realtor, who had been through the entrepreneur process himself. With these efforts the Sheatlers’ were able to make their dream of being their own boss a reality.
“We still have a lot of work to put into the grounds before all the campsites are open but, we are excited to finally be able to get to work,” says Mary and Lynn Sheatler.
Having known the previous owners, Frank and Ruthann Carrol, the Sheatler’s also have a personal investment in the campground. They would love to see Good’s Campground, not only restored but, updated and improved to provide a memorable camping experience for all ages.
Good’s Campground is currently offering a limited number of sites for reservations. They inform everyone who books a spot of the current restoration process and temporary closure of facilities on the property.
Their vision for this campground is to focus on hospitality while providing a fun back to nature type vacation experience for adults and children. Eventually the facility will offer over 70 tent and RV sites with electric and water options, a general store, arcade, pond and baseball diamond all at a location right next door to Rickett’s Glen State Park. RBI expects nothing but wonderful things as the Sheatlers’ restore the Good’s Campground and grow their local business in Luzerne County.
